To Harden High Carbon Damascus:

  • Heat to 1500 degrees Fahrenheit
     (non-magnetic orange)
  • Soak 2-4 minutes depending on size
  • Quench in warm oil
  • Temper at 400 degrees for 1 hour
 To Etch:
  • Mix 1:2 ratio solution of PCB etchant from Radio Shack (ferric chloride) and distilled water
  • Place steel and solution in non-metallic container
  • Soak for 15-45 minutes, depending on desired effect
  • Neutralize with baking soda and clean water
  • Dry and lightly oil
